Tuck pointing is an important part of mortar care. While it’s true that brick, concrete blocks & stone will last 20+ years, the mortar between those materials may crack or deteriorate over time. This is especially common in the Chicagoland area where we see a lot of cold, wet weather.
Remember, mortar is a combination of portland, lime, sand and water. It’s not impenetrable. Pile a few decades together of below zero weather and water will eventually be absorbed into the mortar. If it’s winter, the frigid temperatures will cause the water to freeze and expand. That expansion causes the mortar to crack and crumble. If left untreated, the mortar joints weaken and not only result in loose bricks or stone, but also damage the stability of the structure.
When mortar joints are damaged, the most cost-effective solution for a homeowner is repairing the affected areas by tuck pointing. As long as the deterioration hasn’t weakened the structural integrity of the wall, chimney or outdoor fireplace we offer our tuck pointing services. Otherwise a partial rebuild may be necessary.
